Voith Maxima Set for InnoTrans Debut
The author discusses the Maxima 40CC diesel hydraulic locomotive, the first complete locomotive to be manufactured by Voith, which will be unveiled at the International Trade Fair for Transport Technology (InnoTrans) in September 2006. The Maxima is considered highly suitable for freight operations because of an up to 2,500 kW dynamic braking effort and 408 kN starting tractive effort, as well as a Voith LS640 reU2 turbo-split transmission driven by a medium-speed 3,600 kW 12 or 16 cylinder diesel engine. A passenger version will also be available, with 160 km/h operation and electric train supply. A box describes ongoing competition between diesel and electric systems, as well as a locomotive by Vossloh that will be unveiled at InnoTrans.
