Ultrasonic Testing Enters a New Phase

The author describes Speno International's new multi-element phased array unit for rail inspection, which will replace the traditional fixed angle probes (approximately 10), as well as Speno's new high-speed rail testing method and system. Speno's end goal was, from a single ultrasonic pulse, detection and identification of all defects in the multi-element probes' acoustic field, and this independently of the defects' angles, positions, and shapes, in line with the heavier demands of high train speeds and axleloads. Speno's array unit will test at speeds of up to 80 km/h.
