E-Commerce and the Canadian Trucking Industry Needs Assessment Report
The overall goal of this study is to raise awareness of electronic commerce (e-commerce) and increase its adoption in the Canadian trucking industry. This report represents the culmination of the Needs Assessment phase of the study, which is aimed at assessing the current status of e-commerce adoption in the Canadian trucking industry and documenting successful practices and barriers encountered by Canadian firms already using these technologies. Another aim of the Needs Assessment is to ensure that future government policies will allow Canadian firms and their clients to take advantage of the benefits offered by e-commerce. This Needs Assessment Report achieves the aforementioned objectives by exploring a number of areas. It first provides working definitions of e-commerce for all industries and the specific Canadian trucking context. Next the report sets the context by providing information in three areas: e-commerce’s impact on the overall economy; other industries’ experiences with e-commerce; and technology trends that are likely to impact trucking and other industries in the next decade. The third section of this report, which represents the most substantial analytical effort, presents the results of a survey targeted at trucking firms across Canada, as well as information from several follow-up case study interviews. The goal of the survey and the case studies was to seek out the current strengths in the industry by identifying best practices in e-commerce, and also determine barriers that may be preventing its adoption. The final section of this report presents a synthesis of the Needs Assessment findings, including recommendations on future initiatives to bolster the success of the Canadian trucking industry.
