Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers
Optometrists are often called upon to perform a multitude of tasks in the course of practice. However, for many practitioners, few are as difficult and unnerving as informing older adult patients that they may need to give up driving because of inadequate vision. Developed in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this article discusses the Physician's Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers, a publication that raises "red flags" that health care providers, including optometrists, can look for when checking the roadworthiness of a patient's vision, as well as some tips to ease the awkward process of counseling a patient on cessation of driving.
