Time to Line Crossing for Lane Departure Avoidance: A Theoretical Study and an Experimental Setting

In this paper, the authors study the concept of time to line crossing (TLC) as based on a distance to line crossing (DLC) computation. They discuss the human factors relationship to TLC and driver performance. Geometric formulas of TLC are reviewed, taking into account vehicle positioning. Using dynamic models, future vehicle positions are predicted, with consideration given to vehicle state and road curvature. The TLC is evaluated on straight and curved road sections using a digitalized test track. Results indicate the need to take into consideration vehicle dynamics to use the TLC as a lane departure indicator.
