Across the Board
Master planned communities come in all sizes and shapes. This article describes some larger-scale planned communities that include ecological elements in their design. Civano in Arizona is planned as an 800-acre town that melds new urbanism and ecological design. Almere in the Netherlands is a transit-oriented town with a significant amount of affordable housing. Stockholm's Hammarby Sjostad is one of the largest brownfield redevelopment projects in the world. These projects all have the potential of mainstream acceptance and demonstrate the importance of public-private partnerships. However, they also highlight the difficulty of accommodating multiple and complex goals in planned communities.
