Gateway to Queensland
This article describes the $1.56 billion Gateway project in Queensland, Australia. The project will involve upgrading 20 kilometers of the Gateway Motorway and constructing a second Gateway Bridge in order to ease congestion due to a recent surge in economic activity and population. The bridge will utilize new electronic tolling technologies that will ensure that traffic will not be negatively impacted by fee collection. The previously existing bridge will also be refurbished as part of the project, with a combined six lanes in either direction to be open by 2011. The author also explains that, during construction and renovation, lanes in both directions will still be open in order to prevent detours.
