A bridge management system for Sydney’s railways: how a practical and useful tool has been developed to manage RailCorp’s bridges
This paper outlines the development of a Bridge Management System to assist in the asset management of RailCorp’s 1200 bridges and other major structures within the Sydney Metropolitan rail network. It provides historical background to explain why a bridge management system was needed, how it has been developed and how it is now being used to improve asset management practices across RailCorp. The paper describes the key elements of the system and some of the unique features of this inhouse developed system that distinguish it from many of the commercially available systems in use around the world. In particular, the RailCorp Bridge Management System has been developed out of existing asset management systems used in the track, signals and electrical systems areas of RailCorp’s business, which has brought a new approach to the management of structural assets.
