Japanese Infrastructure
Japan has a reputation for punctual and reliable railroad operations. This article examines how the Japanese railroad fleet and infrastructure contributes to this success. A major factor may be the willingness of government and industry to invest in facilities, personnel and technology to ensure that nothing is left to chance. New vehicles are rigorously tested before introduction to correct any technical failures before fleet operation. Two types of automated inspection trains are used to inspect the track, the electric traction power supply and the signal and telecommunications equipment regularly. Standardized maintenance regimes are used and the staff strictly complies with the content of the maintenance manual. Rigorous post-maintenance checking also is conducted.
