BRT: Improving the Environment

In this article the author discusses efforts made by the Eugene, Oregon-based Lane Transit District (LTD) organization to construct a bus rapid transit (BRT) system to improve the system’s service. This effort was managed by the general director of LTD, Mark Pangborn. While some pushed for a light-rail transit (LRT) system, the prohibitive cost led LTD to choose BRT instead. The system, known as Emerald Express (EmX), uses dedicated bus lanes for a majority of its service route, with vehicles getting signal priority at intersections. The author also discusses funding for the EmX SAFETEA-LU, vehicle selection, marketing, and the group pass that EmX offers.
