The Calculation of the Own Ship Motion
The author examines the use of Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) in a ship motion elements (COG and SOG) estimation methodology. Some peculiarities dependent on a ship's relative position and distance to benchmarks, in relation to ship motion elements and application calculation methodology, are examined. An algorithm based on this methodology, which may be realized through personal computer use, is elaborated using the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transportation's navigational simulator. A special output device can connect the ARPA system with a personal computer.
