Measured Versus Modeled Aircraft Noise at Logan Airport

This paper describes how the data from Boston Logan International Airport’s noise monitoring system were compared with Integrated Noise Model (INM) predictions for the calendar year 2002. Differences between the “aircraft only” day-night averaged A-Weighted sound level (DNL) measured at the 29 microphones around Logan and the INM predictions were as much as 13 dB, and over 2 dB at one site overlooking the airport. Although the newest version of the INM was used, it continues to generally underpredict noise at Logan. This paper investigates the range and validity of yearly “aircraft only” DNL at the sites around Logan. Using data from September, 2001, when no aircraft were flying in the United States, estimates were made of the aircraft component of the yearly DNL. Each of the methods will be discussed in detail, along with known biases. A set of values were chosen for use in producing a contour map of measured airport noise.
