A New Breed of Investor Emerges
This article explores the recent interest in railroads by a handful of wealthy investors, despite a decline in traffic. The article reports that Wall Street professionals believe the answer may be pricing power: despite a four percent downturn during the year’s first six months, profits were up because the railroads had implemented and maintained substantial rate increases. Another Wall Street report indicates that investors see railroads regaining market share from the trucking industry over time. The greatest unknown in the future of railroad profits is the threat of re-regulation. The article includes a look at shareholder returns from December of 2001 to December of 2006.
