A New Method for Distance and Relative Velocity Measurement in Vehicle Collision Warning System

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have contributed to the rapid development of active vehicle safety technologies, including collision warning systems (CWS) that can warn drivers of an impending collision event in advance. This conference paper reports on the analysis of common parameters in CWS, then reviews measurement methods of distance and relative velocity. The authors also present an alternative distance and relative velocity measurement method, based on A/D conversion. They then verify this method using simulation data. Results show that parameters measuring resolution have improved markedly and data for CWS warning systems is more accurate using this method.
