MOBILITY FOR THE ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED
This is an edited compilation of forty eight papers from mainly European and North American authors given at the International Conference on Transport for Elderly and Handicapped Persons held at Cambridge, England, 1978, under the sponsorship of the Transportation Research Board, the Road Research Laboratory and the Ministere d'Equipment (Transports) of France. The papers are the first collection of internationally based reports of work being carried out into this particular area of transport provision for the disadvantaged. The topics covered are also broad, ranging from national overviews and policy issues to requirements for design modifications of both installations and vehicles and examples of specialized systems being run in such widely diverse areas as Canada, France, Australia and Sweden. A diversity of viewpoints is presented, reflecting the different approaches which are necessitated by differing geographical and institutional conditions and the different political philosophies of various nations. This is a comprehensive record of a conference which is seen as the first of a series of international conferences on this subject under the same or similar sponsorship.
