The T5 Baggage System
This article describes the new baggage handling system that is under development at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. Considered to be the biggest, single-terminal system in Europe, it covers over eleven miles of conveyor equipment and will have the capability of processing 12,000 bags per hour. The system, which is primarily underground, features destination-coded vehicle carts traveling up to 25 mph to transport bags along a railway-type track, all the way out to aircraft stands. The article describes the baggage reconciliation and process management system which uses real-time and dynamic intelligent planning and control design to manage expected peaks in passenger demand, as well as provide tracking and screening.
