Electronic Cargo Seal for Safe and Secure Supply Chain Traceability
The United States government recently made plans to make the use of electronic container seals mandatory on all imported containers. This planned regulation further specifies that containers may be import restricted or prohibited if they do not have electronic seals. Electronic seals are radio frequency identification chip embedded tamper-free seals, which can provide additional security information, such as tampering status history and tamper evidence. The authors briefly review electronic seal system components and characteristics, as well as container seal types. The authors also review international cargo security efforts including International Standards Organization, Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, and Container Security Initiative requirements. Finally, there is discussion of technology development's future directions, current issues, and status.
