Development of an Ocean Forecasting System off the West Coast of the United States: Sea Level Applications
This paper provides an overview of the need and essential components for a coastal ocean forecasting system. Specifically, key forecast subsystems are described and the state of the art in their development and integrated implementation and application are highlighted as part of a prototype coastal ocean forecast system for the U.S. West Coast. Emerging needs, capabilities, and mechanisms to better address the information requirements of coastal users are also discussed. Regional ocean forecast systems of the type described herein are complementary with necessary elements of the developing global ocean observing system in order to accomplish the goal of predicting future changes in sea level.
