Roaring Rails: An Enigma Largely Explained

Crucial information explaining the causes of roaring rails and rail corrugation has been found through a new train operation method on the London Underground's Victoria Line, which been run under a form of automatic train control since it opened in 1967. The Coasting Control Over-ride (CCO) project arose from the challenge of increasing railway capacity at modest cost and is providing invaluable information about ethereal scientific questions such as rail corrugation's cause, as well as the practical question of how to gain additional capacity from existing infrastructure. One tool used in the CCO project was the Corrugation Analysis Trolley, which allows reliable, quick, and accurate measurement over test sites which are several hundred meters in length. Testing performed on track is discussed. Color photographs complement the article.
