Roll the Asphalt
This article describes a Russian road engineer’s ingenious yet simple ways of making roadways more durable. Professor Mark P. Bolshtyanskiy suggests that roads do not deteriorate in a uniform way. About 80 percent of the roadway is barely used because vehicle tires only run on only about 20 percent of each lane. Bolshtyanskiy offers that making that smaller area stronger than the rest of the pavement. He also suggests periodically remarking the lanes so the areas that normally do not get worn are used.
