Powerful Fabrics: Geosynthetics Have a Wide Variety of Uses and These Include Providing Extra Strength in Highway Construction

This article examines the growing use of geosynthetic fabrics to provide additional strength in highway construction. Demand for these products is expected to grow 4.4 percent through 2010. These products can be used for soil reinforcement, improving load-bearing capacities, erosion control, retaining walls and bridge abutments, as well as asphalt reinforcement and deep foundation. The author describes how these products have been used in bridge construction in Germany. Advantages in using geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) include both considerable savings in time and costs.
