Verification Tests of Energy Storage System for DC Electrified Railways Using EDLC
In this article, the authors describe an energy storage system for a DC electrified railroad. The storage system consists of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs), a diode bridge rectifier, a chopper system, and a pulse-width modulated converter. EDLCs feature rapid charge/discharge characteristics, in comparison with secondary batteries, as well as low pollution, high efficiency, and low maintenance durability. Verification tests conducted on the systems in cooperation with the Enoshima Electric Railway Company and the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau confirmed the effectiveness of the systems.
