Protecting the End User To the End
This article reviews what measures the tunneling community has done to improve tunnel design and operation in light of several serious tunnel disasters in recent years. Statistics show that safety records in road tunnels is better than on open roads. The article looks at the effects of minor incidents in tunnels. It also describes new control systems, ventilation, lighting and life-saving equipment that was previously not available. Portable refuges that supply air are available now and installed in the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
