Upping the E-Security Ante

This article gives a survey of top concerns about cyber security for railroad properties and general steps to guarantee that data and systems are not vulnerable to viruses and privacy breeches. Potential targets for hackers are email systems, Web sites, intranets, personal digital assistants, radio and wireless data transmissions and other communications networks, which railroads use in high volume to keep in touch with shipments, customers and employees. Backup data storage on separate machines, mirror operations and secure firewalls are among the standard practices that should be adhered to. Complete encryption of messages sent over networks is another industry standard. A risk-based approach to cyber security will result in continuous awareness and self-assessment.
