Map of the Month: Milwaukee Road, 1969 and 2007
In the “Map of the Month” feature, the Milwaukee Road is compared for the years 1969 and 2007. Its original, 1873, name is considered more accurate: Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul. This article gives a history of its gradual expansion in stages, to the point where it had 10,733 route-miles in 1946. Today the 630-mile Wisconsin & Southern traveled by a collection of carriers replaces it. A detailed map shows active lines, abandoned lines, out of service lines, active rights and abandoned rights. At its height, it stretched from Louisville, Kentucky, to Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.
