Analytical Determination of Loudest Noise Hour for Highway Noise Impact Analyses
This paper outlines a simple procedure to determine the loudest noise hour period for highway noise analyses. This primary benefit of this procedure is to provide a quick screening tool to determine the period during which the loudest/worst noise hour is expected to occur. Once that period is identified, a detailed noise modeling effort using actual project data for the correct period would still be required to determine the precise existing and future traffic noise levels. This procedure takes into account projected Level of Service (LOS), roadway configuration, and receiver distance. Future work in refining this method should include evaluating the influence of heavy trucks on the prediction procedure and testing the procedure against empirical data.
