COMPREHENSIVE AUTOMOBILE TRAFFIC CONTROL-ROUTE GUIDANCE AND OTHER SUBSYSTEMS

The Comprehensive Automobile Traffic Control Technology Project, which is hoped will become a powerful weapon in reducing automobile accidents, exhaust gas pollution and congestion in city traffic, was started in 1973. This control system will also relieve drivers of unnecessary mental tension and enable them to circumvent hazardous situations. From the Fall of 1977, the pilot test will be in operation to evaluate the entire system performance in a 28-square-kilometer area in the southwestern part of Tokyo The system has been proposed in 5 different subsystems: The route guidance subsystem is based on individual two-way digital communication between the system and vehicle equipped with the subsystem units. Through this vehicle equipment, the driver can encode his distination and get necessary direction at each intersection and reach his destination in minimum time. The driving information subsystem is based on a oneway digital communication from the system to the driver and it gives the driver messages of important traffic signs, cautional information or speed violation warnings through the visual display unit inside his vehicle. The traffic incident information subsystem is immediate oral communication from the control center to the driver who can get regional traffic information while passing by the antennas which are extended along the street. The route display board subsystem supplies road information to any vehicle passing the display board at the roadside. The public service vehicle priority subsystem will control traffic signals to give top priority to public service vehicles at intersections. In this subsystem, registered public service vehicles can be traced and located in the control center. /Author/
