PROBABILISTIC CONSIDERATIONS IN THE FOUNDATION ENGINEERING FOR OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

The effects of cyclic loading on the soil beneath offshore structures are described, interpreted and analyzed. The results are presented of a comprehensive laboratory test program which studied the stress-strain and strength behavior of clay subjected to cyclic loads. A mathematical description is given of the observed behavior, and the development of numerical models suitable for computer applications is detailed. Two different approaches are given: a simplified approach based directly on test results, and a mathematical model with the framework of the flow theory of plasticity. Both approaches have been pursued for enough to allow development of finite element computer programs which will give cyclic platform displacements.
