Single European Sky in Sight

In order to enhance air traffic management in Europe, six countries – France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg – joined their respective civilian and military aviation authorities in 2006 to create the Single European Sky. The goal of the partnership is to create a large Functional Airspace Block (FAB) that covers the busy upper and lower airspace Central Europe (known as "FAB Central Europe"). Established through European Commission legislation in 2004, Single European Sky is designed to harmonize and simplify the Air Traffic Management (ATM) network – via mutual agreement between countries – by 2009. The article discusses the process of implementing the legislation – Airspace Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 551/2004) -- in detail, along with some of the expected challenges related to the governmental and cultural differences of the various European Union member states.
