Infrastructure to the Rescue
This article looks at how the downtown rebirth of Phoenix, Arizona, involved the successful collaboration of its public works departments. In 2004, the city published Downtown Phoenix: A Strategic Vision and Blueprint for the Future. Within this revitalization document, goals were set out for housing, business, cultural development, and land use. The program has had a significant impact on transportation in that construction activity prompted various traffic restrictions. The article mentions efforts directed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion through the enhancement of the city’s advanced traffic management system as well as the anticipated opening of a light rail system in 2009.
