Connective Intelligence: How Wayside Detector Data Can Be Extended and Integrated Into Car Fleet Maintenance Management

This article discusses how wayside detector data can be extended and integrated into rail car fleet maintenance management. Currently, wayside detectors are primarily used for determining the condition of systems that deal with operating and running of rail cars. The Technology Driven Train Inspection (TDTI) initiative is focused on enhancing the quality and efficiency of train safety inspection processes. This will be achieved by using advanced wayside vehicle condition detection, wayside performance detection, and wayside machine vision inspection technologies. Since TDTI will also have a role in initiating and planning maintenance, the article discusses the need for an integrated maintenance system incorporating wayside detector data that will need to be based on some form of matrix system which can accommodate different weighting factors.
