Due to the shrinkage of concrete during the hardening process and drying together with the weak tensile strength, injurious cracking may sometimes be produced. To overcome this drawback expansive concrete has been developed. A method of estimating the expansion of concrete in an element, which has asymmetrical arrangement of bars, is proposed. This method has the feature that estimation can be made very simply merely by measuring expansive strain of the standard uniaxially restrained test specimen. Time dependent characteristics of chemically prestressed elements are also discussed.
