Head in the Clouds: Laser Scanning for Models
Laser scanning technology, commonly used in the film industry to create visual effects, have found new applications in structural engineering. This article discusses how consulting company Gilford has used laser scanning to create 3D cad models for bridge maintenance schemes. The article discusses how these models have been applied to the company’s projects. Also noted is how 3D visualization design techniques have been used in steel fabricators, especially in creating virtual models of projects such as the new terminal at Heathrow Airport. Finally, the article notes that despite the increase in applications, more common software formatting will be needed before an acceleration in 3D demand becomes wide spread.
