Chinese Checkers: Software Used for the Sutong Bridge

In this article, the authors discuss the versatility of RM, the software program developed by software specialist TDV for use in designing the Sutong Bridge. Spanning China's Yangtze River, the design project is expected to be the world's longest cable-stayed bridge, with the main bridge span measuring 1,088m. Completion is scheduled for 2009. The authors describe a number of design challenges the project has posed, including environmental factors (heavy fog and rain, tornados, high wind speeds), navigational conditions (to allow for the passage of container ships and large fleets). The authors also discuss investigations to determine heavy wind impact, cable vibration, and dynamic wind analyses. One essential the authors especially note is the need to design appropriate characteristic design parameters for the damper elements, including gap size, elastic stiffness and dynamic characteristics.
