A SIMPLE TEST ON USER AND SYSTEM OPTIMAL TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENTS

This article provides an illustration of how a general purpose traffic assignment program, arrbtrafic, can be used to obtain user and system optimal flow patterns. Two areas requiring further study are indicated. Firstly, there is a problem in determining the number of iterations required for a 'good' flow pattern and further research is necessary to provide a suitable stopping criterion and to improve the convergence rate of the algorithm. Secondly, there is a case for enforcing by means of traffic management tools, a system-optimal flow pattern. /TRRL/
