Antwerp Gains Massive Capacity Boost
Radically improving passenger service is a main reason behind major capacity enhancement in Antwerp, Belgium's central rail station. Attention to architectural detail, a 26 m-deep atrium, and a 65-commercial unit shopping area complement changes to platforms and tracks. Shorter wait times and smoother movements of trains in and out of the station are anticipated. The author includes information on Intercity train service and stock replacement by European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) equipped locomotive-hauled sets. An insert describes problems associated with high-speed service in certain European nations.
