Solid case for concrete
This article considers the potential for more extensive use of concrete on motorways and major roads in the UK. The provision of a stiff concrete inlay in truck lanes of a motorway extends the life of the road, reducing the need for maintenance closures and improving fuel savings for trucks. Surfacing with asphalt provides its noise reduction benefits. Concrete step barriers are increasingly being used to prevent crossover accidents: they are longer-lasting than steel barriers and require little or no maintenance during their life.
