Managing low clearances under bridges in Perth
Perth, Western Australia has numerous road or rail bridges over roads which have clearance well below 4.6m. These bridges are classified by Australian Standards as low bridges. Some of these bridges are occasionally hit by over-height vehicles. Even some bridges with clearances well over 4.6m have been impacted by overheight vehicles. This paper will consider the requirements of Australian Standards and Western Australia's statutory requirements for low bridges and the traffic and structural environment in which they are placed. It will then look at other methods of warning road users of low bridges and give case studies of how damage from actual impacts have been or can be addressed and minimised. A more detailed study will be given on one low bridge which had been hit frequently and has recently had the low spans replaced, and advance warning low clearance gauges installed.
