A Graceful Link
This article describes the design, construction, and opening of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge across the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina. The $540-million Arthur Ravenel Bridge, completed for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) by its design-build contracting team within 4 years of the project's outset, is the longest cable-span bridge in North America. The 8-lane structure opened to traffic in July 2005, after a week-long community celebration. The focus of the article is on the design-build nature of the project, which has proven to be an unqualified success from all vantage points, according to SCDOT.
