The Passenger Wheelchair
This paper describes how, one of the factors that came out of the “Year of the Disabled” was the need to examine the requirements of that group of people just outside the existing wheelchair user group, and to see if it were possible to extend the usefulness of wheelchairs, by re-designing if necessary, to cater to this group. The British Department of Transport place an exploratory contract which, while requiring existing standards to be adhered to, that allowed free rein for producing a new design concept for wheelchairs and the results are outlined in this paper.
