MEANS OF PREVENTING FAILURE OF PRESTRESSING REINFORCEMENT DUE TO CORROSION

DES MOYENS DE PROTECTION CONTRE LES RUPTURES PAR CORROSION DES ARMATURES DE PRECONTRAINTE

The first part of the report describes the mechanisms of various types of deterioration of prestressing reinforcement due to corrosion under mechanical tensil stress (as a function of the electrochemical conditions in which the steel is placed and of the metallurgical characteristics of the latter) and the influence of different exogenous factors on corrosion kinetics. Part 2 proposes a method of preventing corrosion failure under tensile stress during the planning or construction of prestressed concrete structures. This is partly done by giving the reinforcement a temporary or permanent protection. Galvanization plays an important part in this protection and details are given of its conditions of use. Attention is drawn to the relatively high costs of these preventive measures. They should only be used after laboratory investigations. /TRRL/
