Who Has the Keys?
Safety in the workplace has emerged as one of the top issues facing business executives today, particularly those in construction. Federal laws clearly require employers to provide a safe work environment for all employees, and 26 states have adopted their own workplace safety standards and enforcement policies. This article discusses how, when examining worker safety policies, a business based in construction or fleet management should emphasize the safety of its drivers and the condition of its vehicles both on the road and at the jobsite. Safety practices are recommended including: collecting and verifying the motor vehicles of drivers/employees; not skimping on maintenance of company vehicles; keeping complete and accurate files on all fleet vehicles; reading the factory guidelines for each company vehicle and requiring all drivers to do the same; create and enforce consequences for unsafe driving by employees; and providing drivers with training opportunities so that poor driving behavior can be addressed.
