OeBB sets its sights on massive freight growth
An interview with Johann Narrenhofer, Investment Manager, Group Cargo of OeBB, Austria is reported. OeBB hopes to maintain its market share of approximately 30% in freight transport, in the face of ever expanding road traffic. OeBB is investing heavily in wagons and in infrastructure on the Danube corridor. OeBB's main market is Germany and the company's target market for new growth is central and eastern Europe, with cooperation from the former state operators. OeBB operates Mobiler, which allows special boxes to be switched from road to truck using a train-mounted crane. Mobiler offers a good logistics solution for central and eastern Europe, where infrastructure is generally poor. The biggest growth potential is recognised to be intermodal, and OeBB believes that all big industrial plants in Europe should have direct rail connections. In Austria, 67% of rail volume comes from rail-connected customers. OeBB is less enthusiastic about rolling-highway operations.
