A world without oil
The economics, environmental and energy security issues associated with the finite nature of oil reserves are discussed. The viability of alternative fuels for vehicles is considered. These include gas-to-liquid (GTL), coal-to-liquid (CTL), bio-to-liquid (BTL) fuels, biodiesel, and rape methyl ester (RME) fuel. These are compared with oil in terms of ERoEI (Energy Returned over Energy Invested) values, sustainability, environmental impact and supply security. The production of CTL and GTL at synthetic fuel refineries is discussed. Tables are presented showing natural gas consumption by region, investment costs for synthetic fuel facilities, recoverable shale oil by region, ERoEI for various fuel types, oil consumption by region, gas reserves by country, and oil reserves by country.
