Ice-free operation
Automated systems for preventing ice formation on bridge decks are discussed. Boschung's surface condition management system has a range of options built around three main functions: surface condition assessment, surface treatment and surface data management. Road maintenance crews need to know the pavement temperature and the freezing point temperature of the liquid mixture on the surface. If the former is higher than the latter, no ice formation will occur. Application of anti-icing chemicals will lower the freezing point temperature, but traffic and rain can reduce the proportion of chemical over time. Boschung's networked Road Weather Information Systems use pavement sensor technology to provide road maintenance crews with information on pavement conditions. Active pavement sensors measure the freezing point of any liquid on the roadway. Spraying is initiated when the onset of frost is detected. Two types of spraying devices are used depending on road type: Fast (fixed automated spray technology) and Micro-Fast. The Boschung BORRMA web software can simultaneously display all mobile and fixed equipment.
