Demanding details

Developments in modern strand-jacking equipment for lifting and launching procedures during bridge construction or dismantling are discussed. VSL strand-jacking equipment was used in the demolition of the 1927 Carquinez Bridge and in the construction of the Miraflores Viaduct in Spain. Lifting speed is becoming an important issue where lifts have to take place above busy shipping channels. Strand-jacking equipment is especially suitable for such lifting work because of its small self weight compared with its lifting capacity. VSL has developed a hydraulic strand coiler that reduces the time for lowering or lifting of strand cables including attachments by 20 times. VSL strand-jacking equipment is being used in the construction of the sixth bridge in Rouen, France and will be used in the replacement of a 120m-long steel truss of a bridge over the Nord Ostsee Kanal in Germany, to lift the back-spans of the Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong into position, and to lift the steel arches of the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi into position.
