Stable solution

Bin Hafeez Establishment was awarded the contract to upgrade and widen a bridge linking Abu Dhabi airport with Swehan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The area is subject to seismic activity. Trelleborg designed and manufactured a mechanical pot bearing to support the highway decks of the bridge, controlling possible up-thrust from a seismic shock. The company tested a wide range of materials for the bearing. Polytetrafluoroethylene used for the sliding surfaces was subjected to tribological testing and long-term performance testing by MPA Stuttgart Institute in Germany. Trelleborg came up with a worst case specification, allowing for conditions specific to the bridge project, including seismic shock, deadweight of the bridge, maximum traffic, impact and vibration. To meet the increasing demand for seismic protection on existing structures, Trelleborg has focused on enlarging its range of bridge expansion joints and designing a new mechanical bearing suitable for controlling uplift forces generated by earthquakes.
