TREATMENTS TO IMPROVE THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF EXISTING BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS

With the support of the highway administrations of Baden-Wurttemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, and Berlin (West), different treatments to improve skid resistance have been tentatively applied on six highway sections with newly-laid asphaltic concrete surfacings. The underlying idea was that the lack in skid resistance is caused by concentrations of non-microtextured bituminous mortar (the mortar consisting only of bitumen and filler) on the surface due to rolling. By means of repeated skid resistance measurements with the locked wheel method of the effectiveness and durability of the different treatments were assessed. According to the test resutls, the following methods can be recommanded: removing a thin layer from the surfacing by milling; the "white spirit and chippings, heating the top zone of the surfacing by means of an infra-red heating equipment, rolling-in the chippings. Together with an evaluation of the world-wide state-of-the-art on this sector, the results of the research project offer a basis for drafting recommendations for the treatment of existing bituminous surfacings in order to improve their skid resistance. /Author/
