Introduction to asphalt mix design

This document has been prepared as part of a series supporting the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology, Part 4B Asphalt, to provide an introduction to asphalt mix design. The document consist of sections dealing with the selection of an appropriate mix type, selecting suitable raw materials, mix composition and grading, designing mixes to the Australian gyratory requirements, Marshall mix design, Hubbard field mix design, mixing testing and concludes with discussion on the various asphalt types and some of the more common additives. The document provides only an outline of the mix design procedures and greater detail is provided as an appendix to Part 4B of the Pavement Technology series. (a) Austroads Project TP1054
