The latest name to enter marine terminology is Ro-Flow, specially coined by Hollming Oy, Rauma, for the series of three highly interesting ships ordered from this Finnish yard by V/O Sudoimport, U.S.S.R. Originally ordered in 1976 the first ship Stakhanovets Kotov, was delivered earlier this year and has already transported heavy plant equipment from France to Russia. The second vessel Stakhanovets Yermolenko, together with the third as yet unnamed, will enter service within the next few months. The three different loading/discharge arrangements, which can be used in various combinations are: Roll on/Roll off: Cargo can be loaded through a 16 m long MacGregor axial stern ramp/watertight door with a 13 m wide driveway. For this mode, two 350 ton heavy load transporters are supplied per ship, so that loads up to 700 ton can be driven onboard. Lift on/Lift off: The deck equipment includes two travelling gantry cranes each with a lifting capacity of 350 tons. Two "wings" aft enable cargo to be lifted from the quay or a barge. Float on/Float off: The ship can be used as a self-propelled dry dock. By opening the aft ramp/door and flooding the ballast tanks, the main deck can be submerged about 2.5 m. Cargo can then be floated or pulled aborad by a winch situated at the forward end of the cargo hold. The ship is then lightened by pumping out water ballast, the cargo hold drained and the aft ramp/door closed. For this operation a 1,400 dwt loading barge forms part of the ship's equipment. The 91 m x 3.6 m hold when in closed condition has a free height of 8 m enabling 8 ft containers to be stowed in three tiers. Closure of the hold to form an upper deck is by means of seven MacGregor pontoon hatch covers capable of supporting an even load of 1.75 t/sq m. Two tiers of containers can thus be carried as deck cargo. The covers, handled by the ship's cranes, are stacked immediately aft of the superstructure when the height of the hold cargo demands an open configuration and when lo-lo loading/discharge is required.
